Baby Clothes Layaway

When should an expectant mother begin to setup the nursery, buy the crib, clothing, etc.?
My co-workers think I’m nuts because I said I am waiting until around the 8th month to make any major changes and purchases. I am 8 1/2 weeks so it’s way too early, but I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch. I used to work with a lady who was expecting twins. She had their nursery all setup, fully ready to go, and she lost them around 6-7 months. I realize you can’t control what happens, but I’m thinking I’ll be saving my money to buy what I need, maybe putting things in layaway (at Burlington Coat Factory Baby Depot) during the 7th month or so, but that’s about it.
I started painting her room when I was 28 weeks. We got the crib around 30 weeks and got most of her clothing after my shower, 34 weeks. Everything was ready at 38 weeks and I had her 40w4d. I waited because I am superstitious and I did not want to jinx my pregnancy.
